Yeah, my recollection is that the Maid of the Mist is the same from both sides, but the views from the top of the Canadian side are better (since you can get right over the Canadian falls).

And I love those little neighborhood Italian joints. I randomly stumbled across one of them in Shanghai yesterday, and like you, the food was pretty okay and it was quite cheap.
