Kick Back: Summer '06
There is a Summer Mix! I know it's still a few hours early, but you would not believe how much
tiamat360 has been bugging me about it since I mentioned it two days ago.
I'm actually pretty happy with this one... it's got a nice mix of rock, folk, and just general kick-backiness. Like many of my mixes, it's sort of weird, but I think I really hit a common mood here, much like with Sunshowers.
In any event:

Kick Back
1. Johnny Cash - "I've Been Everywhere"
2. Doobie Brothers - "China Grove"
3. Sugar Ray - "Falls Apart"
4. Flogging Molly - "Tomorrow Comes a Day Too Soon"
5. Dispatch - "Past the Falls"
6. Joe Satriani - "Summer Song"
7. Chris Isaak - "Only The Lonely"
8. Ani Difranco - "Both Hands"
9. The Cox Family - "I Am Weary (Let Me Rest)"
10. Paul Simon - "The Coast"
11. Statler Brothers - "I'll Go To My Grave Loving You"
12. Taj Mahal - "My Creole Belle"
13. Keb' Mo' - "Henry"
14. Jimmy Buffett - "I Will Play For Gumbo"
15. Sublime - "What I Got"
16. Tally Hall - "Banana Man"
17. Nine Days - "If I Am"
18. Train - "When I Look to the Sky"
19. Moxy Früvous - "River Valley"
20. Indigo Girls - "Get Out The Map"
I have some commentary on several of the songs... feel free to read below, but feel just as free not to.
1. Johnny Cash - "I've Been Everywhere"
I first heard this song back in December, and knew instantly that I would be making a summer mix, if only to put this song on there. It's silly and shallow and catchy as hell, and it will get stuck in your head, but that's okay because Johnny Cash is wonderful. Gotta love a bass with a sense of humor.
2. Doobie Brothers - "China Grove"
I'm taking a gamble with this song. The first and second songs on a mix will make or break the album in the minds of its listeners, and while this is a pretty damn good song, it's also kind of old and way, way better the first time you hear it. I'm hoping that not too many people know this one already, so those opening guitar chords can just grab them by the throat and beat them about the face with kickassitude. Because damn, this song gets you rocking out.
7. Chris Isaak - "Only The Lonely"
This is one of what I think of as the "hidden gems" of my music library -- Chris Isaak covering Roy Orbison with a south-of-the-border feel. It's from an album called "The Baja Sessions," and you'll understand why when you hear it.
9. The Cox Family - "I Am Weary (Let Me Rest)"
It was a huge toss-up between this one and "Angel Band," since I didn't want to have two songs from the same album on the mix. In the end, I just like this one slightly more, plus there was already a Statler Brothers song, and I thought a Stanley Brothers song might be kind of confusing (not to mention the bros. Doobie). But if you want more of this mix, just go and listen to "Angel Band."
10. Paul Simon - "The Coast"
Man it is hard to choose only a single Paul Simon song for a Summer Mix. I spent a long time with this choice, but I finally decided that "The Coast" best fit in with the general mood already established by the other songs on the mix. And in retrospect, I felt it fit so well that I put it at the very center. Well, almost, but...
11. Statler Brothers - "I'll Go To My Grave Loving You"
... is also a perfect embodiment of the sort of overall mood I was hoping to capture. So it shares the center of the mix with "The Coast," and happily so.
12. Taj Mahal - "My Creole Belle"
This is another "hidden gem" song. Actually, the whole album it comes from -- a collection of covers of the songs of Mississippi John Hurt called "Avalon Blues" -- is amazing, and more people need to hear it. It was tough as hell picking out only one song from it to share with everybody, but there'll be another one come the Fall Mix, don't worry. Oh, and actually: "Here Am I, O Lord, Send Me" from Sunshowers came from this record, too.
13. Keb' Mo' - "Henry"
This song wasn't in the first cut of Kick Back, but then it came on my iPod as I was biking home from work just yesterday, and I realized I was an idiot for leaving it off. This version is actually from one of the KFOG Live From the Archives CDs.
14. Jimmy Buffett - "I Will Play For Gumbo"
It is, in fact, statistically impossible to pick only one Jimmy Buffet song to represent Summer. One could make, in fact, several entire Summer Mixes made up only of Jimmy Buffett songs. That impossibility freed me, however, to pick an utterly silly and insignificant Buffett tune that nevertheless is catchy as hell and totally fun. I couldn't make the One Right Choice, so here's the Kick Back Choice!
15. Sublime - "What I Got"
This song is on here for one reason only: GOD DAMN IT HRSFA LEARN SOME FUCKING POPULAR MUSIC. Also it is good.
16. Tally Hall - "Banana Man"
Do you want a banana?
17. Nine Days - "If I Am"
If there's one song that shouldn't be here, it's this one. So if you think the mix is great except for that poppy junk, I totally agree with you, ok?
Note: I kind of like this song anyway :(
20. Indigo Girls - "Get Out The Map"
I pretended to be stumped by what Indigo Girls song to pick, but I knew from the moment I started making this mix which one it would be. This was my very first introduction to contemporary adult music, from way way back in middle school. And I still love it dearly, and it's still an absolutely wonderful song. It is also, for what it's worth, also from a KFOG LFtA album.
As always, leave me a comment if you want a copy!

[shakes head] We come so close to duplicating songs every season. You just wait until you see...
