Because i like not reading boring stuff
Dec. 13th, 2005 12:13 am1. My username is ____ because ____.
2. My journal is titled ____ because ____.
3. My subtitle is ____ because ____.
4. My friends page is called ____ because ____.
5. My default userpic is ____ because ____.
1. Occultatio, because that's the Latin name I picked for myself in high school. Junior year, we all went around in class and gave ourselves Roman-style names, and I chose "Occultatio" as my cognomen based on mostly random flipping through the dictionary. It means "hidden" in Latin, which I thought made it extra-appropriate for an internet alias. I discovered just this fall, though, that it's also a literary term, referring to the technique of revealing information while pretending to hide it; for example, "I'm not going to tell you that the gold is hidden under the oak tree!" I feel kind of sad knowing that it's an actual English word, but at least it's a cool one.
2. "Parvum Opus," because I was kinda running with the whole "Latin" theme, and it seemed an appropriate twist on the more common expression. It's also apparently unusual enough that my journal is the fifth result on a google search for the phrase.
3. "I am following my fish," because of Delirium. This title is tied up inextricably with my userpic, so consider this a pointer to #5.
4. "Ear Lenders," because I'm fucking uncreative. Actually, no: I don't, for the most part, tend to put people on my friends list unless I'm also on theirs -- the source of this meme being one of the very few exceptions -- so I tend to think of my LJ friends primarily as the group of people who read my journal. I can't write unless I know who my audience is, so there you go. I'm not only uncreative, I'm self-centered.
5. The latest incarnation of Delirium comes courtesy of the Something Awful forums. I've had a picture of Delirium as my avatar since basically I got to Harvard, but when I joined the forums this past August, I was just in time to catch an amazing thread in which talented people were drawing comic characters as hand puppets. I requested Delirium, and then when she was drawn, other talented people on the forums animated her for me. I was (and continued to be) absolutely thrilled by the little picture, and I use it both as my userpic here and my avatar there. When I made it my avatar on SA, I used "I am following my fish" as the caption, and I liked the combination of art and text enough to use the phrase for my subtitle on LJ as well.
