A month or two ago, our drama class went over to the local middle school and put on little plays about stuff like self image, friendship, sexual harassment, that sort of stuff. Educational Theater. I wrote about it in passing when it happened, if anyone read that.

My group covered body image. The main plotline was about the "cool kid" and his "cool girl" and the "big dance," and how the girl stuffed her bra because she thought she wasn't big enough, and how the guy saw the tissue and ripped it out and made a scene and embarrassed her, and yes I know it's ridiculous and stupid but bear with me here. I myself, in a real break from character, played a dorky nerd who got teased a lot by the guys and whose best friend was a girl.

After we did the plays, the middle-schoolers had a follow-up assignment (unlucky bastards). They had to pretend to be one of the characters from the play, and write a letter to another character in the play, telling them how they felt. Today, we finally got the letters delivered to our drama class.

The majority were about how the girl was really upset at the guy, and the guy apologizing to the girl. Nestled in among those, however, were two letters written by my character, Spencer. This first was written to Timmy, a relatively popular boy who got teased by the really cool ones:

To Timmy,

I'm sorry your "friends" treated you so badly. You have to realize that popularity isn't everything. You don't need to try and have popular friends to be cool. I don't try and I'm still friends with nice people like Alison. You should say to Scott and Jack that if they don't start being nicer to you, you'll get new friends. Like me. Please.

From Spencer

... actually, I'm not going to post the other one. Nothing can follow up comedy like that.
