I had a major scare today upon reading a friend's LJ:

Britney Spears has done a cover of "I Love Rock And Roll"

Gaah. All my warning sirens went off at once. But then again, I thought, there might be something to it. Determined not to completely dismiss it out of hand, I downloaded it. And OH MY GOD is it awful. DO NOT listen to it, I warn you, especially if you've heard the original. It is an insult to the spirit of Joan Jett. I don't actually know if Joan's dead yet, but if she is she's spinning in her grave.

What is wrong with the song is everything. Where before there was a jagged distorted guitar, there is now a soft synthesizer. Where Joan Jett sang with a hard edge in her voice, Britney is low and soft. This is not entirely her fault; at this point, I honestly don't think she's capable of singing in any other way. The worst part, though, that made me stop the song instantly and burn all traces of it from my computer, was the little semi-orgasmic sighs after every single line. I could have dealt with maybe one or two during the song, but this is overkill.

Important message to Britney: Even though, on the surface, this is a girl-meets-boy song, it is not about love and sex. It is about rock and roll. Hence the title.

One note to the friend who spurred me to write this: I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, that you haven't heard the original yet, and don't know how badly Britney is mauling it. It's the same title, by Joan Jett. Do yourself a favor and listen to it.
